Losing a beloved animal companion can be one of the most tender and heartbreaking experiences we go through. Our pets are family—they walk beside us through life’s seasons, offering unconditional love, comfort, and joy. When they pass on, the grief can feel deep and, at times, isolating.
That’s why we invite you to join UCOP’s Pet Grief Gathering—a compassionate, welcoming space where you can share, remember, and be supported in your healing journey.
Beginning May 9th, and continuing every 2nd Saturday of the month from 10:30am–11:30am CT, this gathering offers a gentle and informal environment to honor the lives of cherished animal companions.
We will meet in the Café at the Fillmore KC Event Space (10000 Marshall Dr, Suite 34, Lenexa, KS), with the option to move to a more private room depending on the group’s preference. Light refreshments will be available as we come together in conversation, reflection, and remembrance.
For those who cannot attend in person, a Zoom option is available, and ASL support can be provided upon request.
This class fee is a love offering, no one will be turned away
This gathering is led by AJ Stutzer, founder of Familiar Pet Care, who brings compassionate care to animals at all stages of their life. Every animal deserves recognition, celebration, and a meaningful memorial.
AJ has over 20 years of experience caring for animal companions. While they grew up with dogs and cats, AJ has worked as a vet assistant and kennel technician at Kansas City area shelters.
AJ became a certified death doula through CareDoula School of Accompanying the Dying in 2018. They have supported many foster and hospice pets, as well as stray and owned animal companions, as they pass on. In addition, AJ is an animal chaplain, ordained through the Compassion Consortium’s program, and a certified Animal Hospice & Palliative Care Advocate through the IAAHPC.
