What is the Season for Nonviolence? (AKA Gandhi King Season for Nonviolence)
The objective each year has been to create an awareness of nonviolent principles and practice as a powerful way to heal, transform and empower our lives and communities. Through an educational and community action campaign, the Association for New Thought recognized those who are using nonviolence to build a community that honors the dignity and worth of every human being. By identifying “what works” in these new models for reconciliation and human harmony, we are demonstrating that every person can move the world in the direction of peace through their daily nonviolent choice and action.
Launching on the January 30th memorial anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, A Season for Nonviolence draws to a close on each year on the King April 4th memorial. Thousands of unique events and programs have been developed and carried out at the local level during the Season. There are 87,000 web pages that refer to Season for Nonviolence. At least 350 major Peace organizations, religious, business, arts, and learning institutions have elected themselves as official co-sponsors of the Season for Nonviolence initiative. SNV was launched at the United Nations for sixteen consecutive years, beginning with the inaugural event in 1998.
What is UCOP doing?
- We are inviting you to read “Ethics for a New Millennium” by His Holiness The Dalai Lama. Books can be ordered after church on Sunday and picked up the following Sunday. Some proceeds from book sales through the church will go to the church.
- Sunday talks will be based on chapters in the book. Beginning on Sunday February 3 and going through March 31.
- There are book study groups that you may join by OR you may form your own group by signing up at Sunday service or by calling the Church office at 913.649.1750
- There is a study guide available either on line at www.agnt.org/ethics-study-course, or it can be purchased at the church as hard copy for $1 to defray the cost of printing. This can be used on your own or with a group.
