Animal blessings are common in spiritual communities around October 4, the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. While this tradition has roots in Roman Catholicism, other faiths and spiritualities also celebrate animals and nature on or near this day.

To join in the fun and celebration this year, Unity Church of Overland Park is hosting our very own Animal Blessing on Saturday, October 3, from 9:30 am until 11:30 am in the UCOP parking lot. Since this is our first year hosting this type of event, we’re keeping it simple. Here are all the details about what you can expect at this gathering and how you and your animal companion, in earthly form or in spirit, can join in:

  • Arrive anytime between 9:30 am and 11:15 am on Saturday, October 3rd . We’ll have tables and chairs set up outside The Fillmore entrance, allowing folks to gather for blessings.
  • If you bring your pet, please keep cats and other small animals safely contained in a kennel, and dogs on a leash. Please don’t allow your animal to run loose. Our parking lot is close to an intersection, and animals may become frightened or stressed when an unrestrained animal approaches them. We want to keep our gathering as peaceful as possible.
  • If you know your pet would be happier staying home, we encourage you to bring a photo of them or share one on your phone.
  • If your animal is in spirit, feel free to bring a photo of them or one of their favorite items, or share a photo of them on your phone.
  • Rev. Jacquie Fernandez, senior minister, and AJ Stutzer, animal chaplain, will facilitate the blessings to ensure all creatures receive recognition during the event!

If you have any questions, feel free to message AJ Stutzer.

We’re excited to see your animal friends on October 3!
