Did you know that the mystics participate in a kind of atheism? Not so much a rejection of God, but a rejection of any claim to know the meaning of the word ‘God.’ The mystics claim God is beyond conception, therefore our language falls short. As soon as we say the word “God,” we have said less than God. It is this brand of atheism that is the refining of our understanding of God. For the mystic, it is the very impossibility of grasping God that gives life profound and deep meaning.
